Why Does My Bathroom Basin Keep Blocking?

A bathroom basin usually keeps blocking because hair, soap and toothpaste combine into a sticky clump around the plug, the pop-up waste or the trap underneath. Clearing the top layer often helps for a while, but if the rest of the build-up stays in the pipe, the blockage tends to come back.

The good news is that most repeat basin blockages have simple causes. Understanding them makes it easier to break the cycle.

Hair and Soap Working Together

Hair on its own can wash away. Mixed with soap, shaving foam and toothpaste, it forms a tangled mat that catches more hair every day. This mat often wraps around the rod of a pop-up plug, where it is hard to see.

Bar soap can be a bigger culprit than liquid soap, as it leaves more residue behind. Hard water can add to the build-up over time.

A basin that is used by several people, such as in a family bathroom, will usually build up faster than one in a guest cloakroom. Long hair washed or brushed over the basin adds to it quickly.

The Plug and Waste Fitting

Many basins have a pop-up waste, where a lever or button lifts the plug. The mechanism sits in the water’s path, so it gives hair something to cling to. If the plug does not open fully, water can also drain more slowly than it should.

If the pop-up mechanism is worn, stuck or broken, the issue may be the fitting rather than a blockage. In that case, sink and basin repairs may be a better fit than unblocking alone.

Why Quick Fixes Do Not Always Last

Pulling hair from the plughole removes what you can see, but the sticky build-up further down stays in place. Before long, new hair catches on it again.

Strong drain chemicals may seem to help, but they can burn skin and eyes, and they are not kind to every kind of pipe. Never mix different products, as some combinations give off harmful fumes. Repeated use is not a long-term answer.

The basin’s overflow, the small hole near the top of the bowl, can also collect grime and add to smells. It is easy to forget when cleaning.

Simple Habits That Help

A small hair catcher over the plughole stops much of the problem at the source. Rinse the basin with warm water after shaving or brushing teeth, and wipe out any hair before it goes down. Clean the plug itself every week or so if it lifts out easily.

If your basin still keeps blocking, or water sits in the bowl for a long time, it may be worth having the trap and waste checked properly. Our Oxford blocked sink visits cover bathroom basins too, and we can explain what was causing the repeat blockage once it is cleared.
