What Are the Early Signs Your Plumbing Needs Repair?

Early signs that plumbing needs repair include damp patches or stains, drips that will not stop, slow-draining sinks or baths, unusual noises from pipes and a water bill that rises for no clear reason. Any of these can point to a fault that is easier to fix while it is still small.

On their own, they do not prove exactly what is wrong, but they are worth taking seriously.

Signs You Can See

Water marks on ceilings, damp patches on walls and swollen skirting boards or cupboard bases can all suggest water is escaping somewhere. Mould or a musty smell in one spot, especially near pipes, can be another clue.

Look under sinks and around toilets and baths from time to time. A small puddle, a stained shelf or rust-coloured marks on a joint may show a slow leak. Loose taps, wobbly toilets or a basin moving on its fixings can also strain the connections behind them.

Outside, look for water running from overflow pipes, damp patches on outside walls below pipes, or areas of ground that stay wet in dry weather. These can all be associated with a fault inside.

Signs You Can Hear

Plumbing usually works quietly. Hissing or running water when nothing is turned on may mean a cistern is not shutting off or water is escaping from a pipe. Knocking or banging when taps close can be associated with pipes that are loose or poorly supported.

Gurgling from a sink, bath or toilet as water drains may suggest something is restricting the waste. It is not always serious, but it is worth noting if it keeps happening.

Changes in How Things Work

Water that drains more slowly each week, a toilet that needs several flushes, a tap that has to be screwed down harder to stop dripping, or flow that becomes weaker at one outlet can all point to wear or a developing restriction.

If you are on a water meter, a bill that jumps without any change in how you use water may suggest a hidden leak. With every tap and appliance off, a meter that keeps moving is a useful sign that water is escaping somewhere. Our leak detection page explains how hidden leaks are found.

Why Acting Early Helps

Small faults tend to grow. A weeping joint can soak into floors and ceilings, a worn valve can fail completely, and a slow drain can become a full blockage. Dealing with them early usually means less damage and a simpler repair.

You do not need to know what is causing a problem to ask for help. Describing what you have noticed, where and for how long is enough to get started. If you have spotted any of these signs in your Oxford home or business, our general plumbing repairs service can look into the cause and explain what needs doing.
